Opening ceremonies: Where has that magical moment of wonder gone?

As a child, I loved being the first person in my family to break through the seal of any new package. It was a constant battle between my little sister and I that soon became a parental bargaining tool to separate and reward us. Be it pushing a spoon through the seal under a jar's lid, zipping open a foil pouch, or pouring that first cascade of corn flakes from the box, there was something special about that moment.

Resealable pack ups convenience ante

On packages of Kraft Foods’ Chewy Chips Ahoy! soft chocolate chip cookies, graphics signal the convenience of operating Kraft’s Snack ’n Seal resealable packaging. A large portion of the pack’s top may be peeled open to withdraw cookies, then resealed for freshness and on-the-go convenience.

Jeanine Maresca, Chips Ahoy! Brand Manager, says AC Nielsen in-home research determined that consumers want more convenient snack packages. The Chewy Chips Ahoy! package responds to this desire with 15-oz packs with a suggested retail price of $3.99.

Grapes join dashboard-dining trend

Add grapes to the growing list of fresh-cut produce showing up in graphically appealing, consumer-friendly, convenience-oriented packages that fit in automobile cup-holders.

Welch Foods is rolling out single-serve “grapes on the vine” in 5-oz portions in modified-atmosphere, clear plastic cups. Refrigerated shelf life is 17 days for red grapes, 12 days for green.

Colorful film labels adorn the lid and the cup’s sidewalls. A flexible film lidding is heat-sealed to the filled cup before the rigid lid is snapped on.

The product has a suggested retail price of $1.75.
